この賞が発表されると、あぁ、12月に入ったのか…今年も終わりだな…と、映画ファンに年末が近いことを実感させてくれる風物詩のようなナショナル・ボード・オブ・レビュー賞が、今年2011年の各賞を発表し、クロエ・モレッツちゃんとエイサ・バターフィールドくんの少年少女が主演した名作映画「ヒューゴ」が最優秀作品賞をヒットしたほか、「キック・アス」（2010年）も、「レット・ミー・イン」（2010年）も観ておらず、彼女が何者だか、よく知らないまま、オーディションで正直に最も才能のある女の子を選んでくれた名匠マーティン・スコセッシ監督も最優秀監督賞に輝きました…！！、しかしながら、昨2010年にデヴィッド・フィンチャー監督の傑作「ソーシャル・ネットワーク」が、この漢字で書くと “米国映画批評会議賞” になるらしい賞を制覇した時にも、あッ、痛…ッ！！と書いたように、プロの映画評論家や映画製作者らに交って、フツーの映画ファンや、一般の学生などが選考するナショナル・ボード・オブ・レビュー賞で目立った映画はおおむね、映画賞の本命＝オスカーでは惨敗の結果を迎える傾向にあります…。なので、「ヒューゴ」にからみ、クロエ・モレッツちゃんにアカデミー賞のステージにあがってほしい…！！と願っていたファンの方の夢は、早くも期待薄となってしまったのかもしれませんし、「ソーシャル・ネットワーク」と同様に、主要部門では受賞を果たせそうにないのかもしれません…。そうした映画界のジンクスを踏まえると、残念にも思える「ヒューゴ」の受賞ではありますが、昨2010年は前述の「レット・ミー・イン」でホラー映画の年間ベスト①を獲ったクロエ・モレッツちゃんが、とにもかくにも、今年は一般映画で年間ベスト①に選ばれたのですから、小さな大女優さんの怒涛の快進撃だけはホメたたえてあげましょう…！！、


ただし、マーティン・スコセッシ監督が、ジェームズ・キャメロン監督もビックリの徹底的に美しい3D映像にこだわった「ヒューゴ」は、製作費が約1億5,000万ドルを超過の大作映画になってしまったにもかかわらず、全米興行のオープニング成績で約1,135万ドルしか売り上げられなかったことで、大赤字はほぼ確定…となっています。しかし、オープニング成績がそのように少なかったのは、配給のパラマウント映画が1,277館といった控えめなスクリーン数で封切ったことも関係しており、同社では、映画の格付けサイト Rotten Tomatoes で、94%の高い支持率を誇り、観客の約9割が満足の実績というクォリティの高すぎる「ヒューゴ」は、人気の寿命が長い名作映画として捉え、俗っぽく一気呵成に集客を狙うよりは、口コミの実力勝負で長期的に投資を回収する方針だと考えられています。

“HUGO is such a personal film by Martin Scorsese,” said Annie Schulhof, NBR President. “It is a tribute to the early years of cinema that uses today’s cutting edge technology to bring the audience into a completely unique and magical world. It is visually stunning and emotionally engaging.”

A select group of knowledgeable film enthusiasts and professionals, academics, young filmmakers and students, the National Board of Review viewed over 250 films this year including studio, independent, foreign-language, animated and documentary selections. These screenings were frequently followed by in-depth discussions with filmmakers, directors, actors, producers, and screenwriters. Voting ballots were tabulated by the accounting firm of Lutz & Carr, LLP.

The National Board of Review honors diverse members of the film community at their annual Awards Gala, which also acts as a fundraiser for student grant philanthropy. Hosted by Natalie Morales, this year’s Gala will take place on January 10, 2012 at Cipriani’s 42nd St. in New York City.
